Three Sisters Collection

Collection- see invoice and individual components for botanical names

Developed by the First American peoples, the sustainable ‘Three Sisters’ practice involves planting three crops together – corn, beans and pumpkin (also known as summer squash). The corn provides support for the beans, and in return the beans stabilise the corn in strong winds. Beans also fix nitrogen in the soil for the corn and pumpkin. The large pumpkin leaves act as a mulch and suppresses weeds while preventing water from evaporating from the soil. Try the ultimate companion trio yourself! Not for NT/TAS/WA.

Three Sisters Collection

This planting combination was one of the first sustainable gardening practises developed by First American peoples. The strong stalks of the corn provide a support for the climbing beans, and in return the beans stabilise the corn in strong winds. The beans also fix nitrogen into the soil and this is then available for the corn and pumpkin. The large leaves of the pumpkin act as a mulch and so suppress weeds and prevent water from evaporating from the soil. So plant the Three Sisters today and feel connected to the gardening pioneers from many centuries ago.
