Australian Red Cedar

Spectacularly fast-growing and statuesque, this Australian native is an exceptional deciduous tree with a long history. Australia’s early settlers called it ‘Red Gold’ as the beautiful dark red timber is termite resistant and was used to make furniture, railway carriages and coffins. Its unique ability to float made it easy to transport along waterways contributing to these magnificent forest giants being cut to commercial extinction by the beginning of the 20th Century. After its unusual winter dormancy for an Australian native, a flush of beautiful coppery-red growth appears in spring, followed by a bright green foliage canopy to create cooling summer shade. Fast growth rate.

How to grow

Plant in full sun or part shade, in very well-drained, fertile soil with a deep profile. A cover of leaf litter is preferred to recreate its natural habitat.
