Turkey Oak

A handsome mid-sized deciduous oak with glossy ornately lobed leaves, narrower than other oaks, which change to a buttery-yellow during autumn. Although known as the Turkey Oak due to the leaf shape resembling a turkey's foot, it is widespread throughout Asia Minor and southern Europe. Mature specimens develop a rounded crown, with lower lateral branches weeping with age. The bark, which has orange coloured fissures near to the base of the trunk, is a distinctive feature. Tolerant of salt spray, it becomes a particularly useful windbreak for coastal areas. Medium growth rate.
How to grow

Prefers a sunny position and humus rich soil but will tolerate a wide range of conditions, including coastal exposure.
