The parent of many modern cultivars including 'Fuyu', 'Hachiya' and 'Jiro', Diospyros kaki has a long history, originating in Asia where it has been enjoyed for centuries. Reportedly introduced to Japan from China in 7th Century, the "Japanese" persimmon has become popular around the world.
How to grow
Drought tolerant once established, this ornamental edible can be grown as a hedge, an espalier or a feature tree. Tolerant of a range of soils, prefers a free draining sandy soil for optimal growth. Although drought tolerant, fruiting will be impacted under these conditions. Suited to full sun or part shade.
