Japanese Persimmon

Diospyros kaki

The original species of persimmon prior to modern cultivar selections. Undeniably the most beautiful of all fruiting trees, its graceful small size produces spectacular autumn tones with leaves starting yellow and turning to orange and red.  Astringent fruit hangs on the bare tree through winter provided it is pollinated by a nearby male or female tree. Plant multiple trees for maximum pollination opportunities as plants can be male, female, have both flower types or change from year to year. Generally, the female flowers are fragrant, cream coloured and held individually, while the male flowers are pinkish and appear as a cluster or group of flowers.
