Asparagus 'Sweet Purple' Crown
The tender spears delight the eye and the palate. 'Sweet Purple' is a long lasting, delicious purple variety which improves every year. A light cutting of spears in the second year is followed by increasing harvests for the next 20 years. Highly productive.
How to grow
Plant crowns in winter while dormant in a well prepared bed. Choose a permanent position as your best spears appear after several years in the ground. Do not harvest spears the first year to allow the crown to establish in your soil. In the second year, harvest spears when they reach pencil thickness, picking daily if suitable, for maximum flavour and crunch. Improve soil every year by applying a layer of compost in winter, ready for their spring growth.
