Carrot 'St Valery'

A French heirloom held in high esteem by 19th century French market gardeners. Its broad neck and long tapering orange-red roots will make it a favourite in your kitchen too. Reliable and productive, worthy of a place in all vegie gardens.

How to grow

Carrots prefer an open, loose soil. Sow seed directly into shallow furrows. Carrots are not hungry crops, too much nitrogen in the soil will result in forked roots. Carrot seed will take a few weeks to germinate, a sheet of semi permeable material can be laid over the seed bed to prevent the soil drying out, remove the material as the seed germinates. You can grow a crop of radish among your carrots as these will germinate and mature quickly and will be harvested before the carrots need the space.
