Cabbage 'Early Jersey Wakefield' (Organic)
A classic American heirloom cabbage that has been a favourite with both commercial and home gardeners since the mid 1840s. Its tight cone-shaped heads make it a great space saving cabbage for smaller gardens. First grown in New Jersey and listed as one of the varieties grown in Thomas Jefferson’s garden, this cabbage is “early” as it can be harvested while young at a size of around 1kg and enjoyed before the heads develop into their full size (2-3 kg).
Cabbages need rich soil with some lime for a pH of about 7.5 and adequate water so the growth is never checked. A good cover of mulch will insulate them from hot, dry spells of weather. Their most damaging pest are the caterpillare of the white cabbage butterfly. Dipel, derris dust and pyrethrum are all effective organic controls for these voracious pests.
