Dawn Redwood

Metasequoia glyptostroboides

Thought extinct for five million years until a small grove was discovered in China in the 1940s. Its seeds were distributed worldwide, saving this ancient tree from extinction. Today this unique deciduous conifer is a statuesque addition to any garden. Features fine-textured green needles, turning brown in autumn before falling. Fast growth rate.

Dawn Redwood

The Dawn Redwood is a majestic conical-shaped tree, distinguished by its deciduous habit in contrast to members of the related sequoia genus of evergreens. It often features attractive deep vertically fissured bark and a trunk that broadens at the base as it matures, developing distinctive 'armpits' beneath each branch. Fossilised remnants have been found dating back 225 million years. The tree faces considerable risks of extinction in its wild range of south central China due to deforestation but fortunately has been planted extensively in global arboreta. A popular outdoor bonsai specimen as it is easy to care for and tolerates pruning very well. Fast growth rate.
How to grow

Plant in full sun in free-draining, acid to neutral soil that is kept moist. Allow sufficient space for its large pyramidal shape and broad base to develop.
