Russian Olive

The Russian Olive, so named for its region of origin and olive-like fruit, is making a resurgence as a popular garden-worthy tree. Incredibly drought and coast tolerant, its elegant silver weeping foliage makes a fine specimen or shade tree. Scented blooms attract bees and pollinators in spring and the small fruit ripening to red in autumn are loved by birds, contributing to its ability to readily self seed. Fruit is edible if very ripe. Elaegnus angustifolia is a fast growing and long lived medium sized tree with attractive brown shaggy bark contrasting with its unique silver foliage.

How to grow

Full sun, free draining soil. Allow canopy to develop its weeping crown or prune to shape as a hedge. Low maintenance, extremely drought, coast and frost tolerant.
