Stevia 'Candy' syn. Sugar Plant
Grow your own Stevia to avoid the processing that occurs when you buy this natural sweetener at the shops. A natural alternative to synthetic and processed sugars, Stevia is not a new plant having been grown by Brazilian and Paraguayan tribes for centuries. Undoubtedly a better alternative to refined sugars, the leaves of Stevia can be used fresh or dry to grind and use as a powder throughout the year. Cool autumn temperatures enhance its flavour so harvest the plant as late as possible for drying, but before any likelihood of frost as it is extremely frost sensitive. Sweet herb (ka'a he'ˆ) 'Candy' grows extra large leaves, doubling your harvest with every snip. Stevia is 200-300 times sweeter than sucrose, with no calorific value and an extremely low glycemic index.
How to grow
Plant in full sun or part shade in a soil enriched with compost and manure. In pots use a premium potting mix. Minimise root disturbance at transplanting. Mulch to conserve moisture and water regularly. Tip prune to encourage compact, bushy growth. Harvest before flowering in summer and dry leaves for use throughout the cooler months. Leaves can be made into a syrup or dried and used as a powder. Protect from frost.
