Jujube 'Chico'
A thorned tree with an unusual zig-zag growth pattern, the rare and unusual fruit are produced in late summer. This small to medium variety of jujube bears apple-shaped fruit with an apple-like flavour combined with that great jujube tang, especially when eaten fresh and green. Crisp and crunchy while green, sweeter when left to dry like a raisin.
Jujubes grow between 3-10m tall and wide depending on climate, conditions, location and pruning. The thorned tree has an attractively random zigzag shape with fine delicate foliage that belies its true nature. Tolerant of dry, light, alkaline and salty soils, it can take - 10øC when dormant, and shrug off 30øC heat, but dislikes humidity.
