Japanese Persimmon
BARE ROOT POTTED. The original species of persimmon prior to modern cultivar selections. It is undeniably the most beautiful of all fruiting trees. Its graceful small size produces spectacular autumn tones with leaves starting yellow and turning to orange and red. Astringent fruit hangs on the bare tree through winter provided it is pollinated by a nearby male of female tree. Plant multiple trees for maximum pollination opportunities as plants can be male, female, have both flower types or change from year to year. Generally, the female flowers are fragrant, cream coloured and held individually, while the male flowers are pinkish and appear as a cluster or group of flowers.
Drought tolerant once established, this ornamental edible can be grown as a hedge, an espalier or a feature tree. Tolerant of a range of soils, prefers a free draining sandy soil for optimal growth. Although drought tolerant, fruiting will be impacted under these conditions. Suited to full sun or part shade.
