Bergenia purpurascens
A tough, clump-forming, perennial ground cover, noted for its glossy, large green leaves that take on deep red hues in autumn and winter, bringing colour to your garden throughout the seasons. The pink to purplish flowers appear on matching reddish coloured upright stems for a spring highlight. Underrated as garden plants, bergenias thrive in a range of both soils and positions in the garden, from poor to fertile, from shade to sun, making them one of the most rewarding, low maintenance options for gardens, rockeries and perennial borders.
Best in partial to full shade, but will tolerate sun in cooler climates. A great option as a bridging plant in those tricky positions that require both shade and sun tolerance. Copes well with brief periods of dryness but prefers moist, rich soil. Remove spent flowering stems and prune off foliage damaged by heat or cold through the seasons.
