Banana 'Dwarf Red Dacca'
Our most compact banana, `Dwarf Red Dacca' will produce its plump fruit on compact pseudostems, making it the ideal choice for small gardens and courtyards. This cool tolerant variety will yield its sweet fruit well outside our northern banana regions. The vibrant skin ripens from deep burgundy to orange, increasing in vitamin C as it softens within. The sweet flesh is tinged pink, and can be cooked, dried or eaten fresh.
Check with your council to gain permission to grow bananas. Plant in a deep rich soil and protect from frost and wind. Mulch the soil, but not the trunk as this will cause plants to rot. When suckers appear, select the strongest to keep and remove the rest. After the main stem bears, cut it down and allow this stem to become the new fruiting stem. Select a new sucker to encourage and repeat. Fertilise regularly, especially during fruit production.
