In The Garden - Highlights at Heronswood in August

Tomato sowing time

The kitchen garden at Heronswood is loving the slightly warmer days with the peas and leafy greens starting to move again after the winter cold.

I finished the insect hotel I have been making using materials from around the garden (you can get a smaller, pre-made version here). It is important to encourage beneficial insects to keep the garden healthy.

We posted the photo to instagram and facebook earlier in the week and we had a very enthusiastic response! The mesh is 11mm square aviary mesh, but you could use any mesh as long as the rodent's can't fit through!

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week are perfect moon planting days for fruiting plants. A great time to get in tomato, capsicum, chilli and eggplant seeds for the season. 

We are harvesting lots of salad greens- mizunas, lettuces, miners lettuce, soft herbs like chervil and coriander and continue  to enjoy 4 types of Kale, broccoli sprouts, romanesco cauliflowers, and 6 varieties of carrots.... Some of the purple and white turnips are heading to the kitchen too...

The highlight of the menu this week in our members Fork to Fork restaurant is the Heronswood vegetable platter, a bed of Beetroot hummus and a carrot stuffed cabbage roll.

For dessert Lemon curd B&B pudding with caramel sauce and beetroot popcorn! (The Beetroot popcorn is incredible!!!)
