Since our humble beginnings in an old tin shed, Diggers members have shared our passion for the preservation of heirloom seeds, sustainable gardening methods and a strong stance against GM and hybridised plants and seeds.
The support from our members has ensured that Diggers succeeded and our gardening magazine grew into Australia’s most popular.
Penny and I were determined to make the transformation from a private, family-owned business into a charitable trust, somewhat like the National Trust but firmly anchored in gardening, education and heritage buildings.
We wanted to ensure that the work we’ve done for more than 40 years, together with our members, in championing heirloom seeds, preserving historic gardens and houses as well as the best garden traditions, will continue forever.
With this in mind, Penny and I, in consultation with our children (who have foregone their inheritance), gifted the ownership of our successful garden company, along with family-owned properties Heronswood and St Erth, to The Diggers Foundation (formerly the Diggers Garden and Environment Trust) in 2011.
In doing so we can ensure that our two Certified Organic gardens, Heronswood and St Erth, will remain intact and always be open to the public.
The Diggers Club receives no funding from government to strive for these ideals. We also do not accept advertising so that we can challenge the big issues of corporate control of our seeds and food supply and its impacts on our soils, climate and personal health, without a conflict of interest.
Can you help us achieve our vision?
We are seeking your support so The Diggers Club can remain fiercely independent. Together we can continue to generate better gardening education, inspire gardeners to grow more food, to plant more trees, and to create beautiful gardens that lead towards us all living long, healthy lives.
You can help us safeguard the future by donating today. Please see The Diggers Foundation brochure for more information, and thank you for your ongoing support.
