Radish

The quickest and easiest of all root crops, radishes are a great way to teach kids how to sow and grow vegetables from seed. Grow with plenty of water and nutrients as hot, dry weather causes fibrous, pithy roots.

It is unclear where radishes are from, but wild radishes are found growing in sandy coastal areas in Western Europe and also in Japan. We do know that it was part of the rations issued to workers on the Great Pyramid in about 2780BC, which is probably because of their high Vitamin C content. There are three types of radishes, the small, quick-growing summer varieties, the large, long season Asian varieties, and the Rat-Tail or Mougri types from India. The latter variety is grown for its long, nutty tasting seedpods, which can be used much like beans.
