Hazelnut

An excellent edible hedging plant with seasonal interest, like autumnal leaves, stunning male catkins throughout winter and then, their decorative husks that form around the nuts – they are, aptly described as simply stunning. More productive when grown with a little space and light, planting as a hedge helps to encourage pollination.

An ancient nut tree dating back to 8000BC, hazelnuts (Corylus avellana) are small trees or shrubs that were commonly grown as hedgerow plants in Europe. Male and female flowers are produced on the same plant, however, they are self-sterile, so more than one plant is required for pollination, usually of multiple varieties as they are very picky about their pollinating partners. Yields 5-15kg per tree depending on variety and pollinating partners.
