All capsicums have high levels of vitamin C and other antioxidants with the hot varieties being beneficial for colds and the respiratory system. Originally from Central and South America, Capsicums need more heat than other members of the Solanaceae family (like tomatoes), with chilli requiring the hottest germination temperatures of all. The hotter the chilli, the higher the temperature required for successful germination. If you want to try growing some of the world's hottest chillies, it's worth investing in a heated propagation mat. Germination temperatures vary between 25- 28°C for most capsicums, and up to 35°C for Carolina Reaper — the world's hottest chilli. In cooler areas, start them indoors and plant out as advanced seedlings when the risk of frost has passed.
