Broccoli

One of the easiest Brassica crops to grow, broccoli is both delicious and nutritious - teeming with antioxidants. A close relative of cauliflower and cabbage, broccoli has been recognised as a separate vegetable for about 400 years.

In Italy, the tender undeveloped flower buds produced on all Brassicas were highly prized, so much so that these were selected, seed saved and replanted for hundreds of years, and now broccoli is a staple in our gardens. Broccoli can be grown year-round in cool climates, however, the ubiquitous white cabbage butterfly is always a problem as the weather warms, so grow and harvest your broccoli in the cooler months, or use organic controls. Harvest the central stem first, leaving the plant in situ to develop repeat-harvest side-shoots that can almost treble your yield.
