Diggers began the search for heirloom varieties in 1992. We conducted our first public taste test the following year, where gardens and foodies were amazed by the flavour of heirloom tomatoes compared to supermarket varieties.
Nothing has changed after near three decades of tomato taste tests, with modern supermarket hybrids coming last every year. 'Tommy Toe' won that first taste test and we now have many other tomatoes that rate just as well.
Today, 98% of Diggers vegetables are heirloom; varieties that have been grown and shared by gardeners for generations, sometimes centuries!
