Sharpen your skills at Digger's monthly workshops. Whether you are a complete beginner or experienced gardener there is something on offer and much to be gained for everyone from our new Digger's programme of "Learn to Garden" monthly events at Heronswood and St Erth. These events focus on a wide range of essential gardening topics, techniques and skills, as well as focusing on specific plants and tasks to suit the season. Through inspiring and insightful garden walks and talks, practical demonstrations and workshops, gardening skills and knowledge will be yours from our experts twice a month at 11.00am.

October 3rd - Growing Food at home

A vegetable garden can be both decorative and edible. We’ll take you through the steps involved in growing your own fruit trees, vegie’s, herbs, and what plants are good companions to keep it all heathly and help the plants look after themselves!

October 31st - Making Pasta from scratch

Come and learn how to make pasta from scratch with Anita. It's so easy, you'll be hooked for good! With this basic recipe you will be able to throw together your own fettuccini, lasagna sheets, tortellini and more.

November 7th - Summer proofing your garden

Give your garden a fighting chance this summer. Why let all your hard work go down the drain? Some simple preparation will get your garden through the harsh summer ahead. Come and learn all the practices we use to successfully get our plants through hot, dry summers and what selection of plants are most suitable for our Australian climate.

November 14th - Basket Making

Come and learn how to make baskets from scratch using foliage and plant material from the garden. Jill Taylor will show you exactly what materials you can use, vines, flax, grasses etc and how to make the basket from base to handle. It's a one on one workshop with an experienced basket maker who also makes hats as well.

November 21st - Chooks

A couple of chooks in the backyard were once a common sight in suburban backyards and many a child and adult was entertained by their antics and fed by their eggs. Veggie gardens and smaller blocks needn't mean an end to keeping these lovely creatures. And why buy eggs when you can grow your own and have free fertilizer for the garden! Come along and find out how easy it is to keep a few chooks as pets, egg providers and as the ultimate garden recyclers.

November 28th - Growing and preserving herbs

This workshop will teach you how to grow both tender and hardy herbs in pots and garden beds. We'll go though growing the easiest herbs that require little TLC to those that need that extra care.

December 5th - Caring for your garden naturally

A great garden is a healthy garden that needs little care in the way of pest control. It has good soil, happy, thriving plants and an industrious army of good bugs and other garden friends going about their business making sure you can sit back and relax rather than worry over the latest aphid infestation.

Come to St Erth for this workshop and learn how to create a garden that will be able to take care of most of your pest problems for you. We’ll teach you about your garden friends and how to attract them into your backyard, about plant selection, soil health as well as all about beneficial insects and what they can do for you.

So come and gain an insight into the fascinating world of your backyard!

December 12th - natural pest control

Learn about the best ways to deal with garden pests without having to reach for an expensive spray full of chemicals that harm your garden, the environment and possibly even you!

The best preventative to pests is to have a diverse garden. This means having a large range of plants that work together to both attract the beneficial insects and discourage the bad ones. Unfortunately even the most diverse garden will need a helping hand once and a while.

So come to St Erth and learn about all the natural ways you can protect your garden from those pesky pests. Learn our nifty tips and tricks to keep pests off your favourite plant as well as how to make your own sprays to treat a variety of common problems in the average garden. Everything from slugs and snails to earwigs! For those who want to care for their garden the natural way or want to save themselves a few pennies!

Join the Digger's team and welcome spring with an inspiring weekend of masterclasses, workshops and garden tours at one of Victoria's most beautiful gardens.

Pick up all the seeds and plants you need to get your garden ready for spring from the St Erth shop and meet local producers and taste their wares on the gracious stretch of lawn in front of the 1860's cottage. Indulge your senses with delicious food, wine and the best espresso coffee at the St Erth Café.

Biodynamics masterclass

A full day, back by popular demand

Healthy soil, rich in humus and high in biological activity are essential qualities for a sustainable and healthy garden.
Learn how to improve nutrient content, soil structure, and enhance plant growth in your garden with a full day masterclass with Biodynamic’s expert Hamish Mackay. The morning will include talks on natural soil fertility, bringing soil to life and developing soil and plant nutrition naturally. After lunch you will join in practical activities including stirring preparations and making compost. Throughout the day there will be plenty of opportunity for you to ask questions so that you’ll be able to grow healthy food using sound environmental practices. Start the day at 9.30 with coffee and a sweet treat. At 12.15 we provide a gourmet lunch box with a glass of wine.

Spring Feast

Join us for an Evening of Fine Food and Fine Wine. See the garden resplendent in its Spring finely and spend the evening with the colours and aromas that are the Gardens of St Erth in Spring. The evening will commence with canapés, champagne and a tour of the garden, followed by a banquet prepared using our own heirloom and heritage vegetables complimented by the best produce the region has to offer accompanied by Barcaldine wines.
