To a gardener, compost is like gold. It is a thriving ecosystem that is vital in improving your soil and therefore the health of your plants. It is a simple process that is often put into the too hard basket by people who have had a bad compost experience. Not only will you drastically reduce your household waste, you will also be investing in the future health of your garden. If composting is something you would like to learn more about, join our retail manager Keith Edwards and he will discuss the composting “recipe”, where it can all go wrong, how to fix an unworkable compost heap and answer any questions you may have.
Take this fabulous opportunity to come and meet some of our talented Heronswood garden team. They are responsible for the beautiful gardens at Dromana and this is a great chance to ask them some of your gardening questions. They will be happy to answer any questions from lemon trees to lavender and soils to salvias.
Espaliered trees originated in Rome where plantings were often restricted to small courtyards. They have once again become popular and not only because they suit small areas. They look fabulous and are a terrific way to incorporate lots of fruiting trees in any space. They are also easy to net and harvest. Espaliering expert, Michael Nielson, will discuss the benefits of espaliered trees, which trees are best and how to begin your own. He will also talk about pruning and maintaining the trees and general care.
Michael Nielson grows espaliered trees at his nursery in Red Hill and can be contacted on 0419528434 or via email
Your camera is the best record keeper of your garden, gardens you have visited, plants you have grown, or plants you are interested in.
But modern digital cameras have a reputation of being too complicated and hard to use. So come along to our camera session and blow away all those myths. Start making the most of your camera, for work or play.
In our session we cover the basics and simple care of your camera, and the things to consider when using your camera in a gardening environment – correct framing, close-up (macro) photography, using the flash and more - and then what to do with the pictures when you have taken them. Of course, your holiday photos will benefit too!
Phil Seymour is an ex-ABC cameraman (he shot many “Sow What” programs with Kevin Heinze) with a passion for all things photographic and horticultural. After leaving the TV industry he spent ten years with a photographic retailer where he taught customers how to use their new cameras. And somehow, amongst all that, he owned a small gardening business.
