The Diggers Club pioneered the rescue of heirloom seeds 19 years ago. Since then commercial seed companies have concentrated on creating hybrid and genetically modified forms of vegetable seeds because they are vastly more profitable. The identity of these sources of supermarket driven food are kept secret and unlabelled so consumers cannot choose not to buy them.
These totally altered seeds confer no consumer benefits but force consumers into buying unlabelled food that needs huge amounts of chemical fertilizer and pesticides and cause massive CO2 pollution. It’s not regional, fresh or organic.
Our garden inheritence of heirloom vegetables developed over hundreds of years suits our needs for better flavour, long harvest and disease resistance.
Heirloom vegetables are open pollinated and true to type. We can save the seeds because we own them. We encourage you to grow heirlooms and become part of the vital preservation campaign, an unbroken chain of garden history. If you save Monsanto’s GE seeds they’ll sue you!
Growing heirlooms is better for your health and for the health of the planet. So grow your own from seeds the corporates don’t own!
